A Life with Clarity

Discover the freedom that comes from stunningly clear vision

What Can I Expect During an Eye Exam?

During an eye exam, your eye doctor will check your eyes to make sure they are healthy and that your vision is clear. Here are some things you can expect during the exam:

  • Vision test
  • Eye muscle test
  • Pupil response
  • Refraction test
  • Eye pressure test
  • Dilated eye exam

The testing that is done during an eye exam often largely depends on your vision and any eye conditions you may have or are at risk of developing.

The entire exam usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Your eye doctor will answer any questions you have and let you know if you need glasses or contacts. They can also give you tips to help keep your eyes healthy.

How Often Should I Schedule an Eye Exam?

Eye exams are important to make sure your eyes are healthy and you can see well. How often you need an eye exam depends on a few things, like your age and if you have any eye problems.

Kids

For kids, it's a good idea to get an eye exam every year. This is because kids' eyes change quickly as they grow. If a child needs glasses, it's important to make sure the prescription is up to date.

Adults Under 60

For adults under age 60, it's recommended to get an eye exam every two years. If you don't have any eye problems and your vision is good, this is often enough.

Adults Over 60

For adults over 60, it's a good idea to get an eye exam every year. As you get older, you are more likely to develop certain eye conditions. If you wear glasses or contacts, you'll need an eye exam more often to make sure your prescription is still correct.

Your eye doctor at Shasta Eye Medical Group will be able to determine how often you should get an eye exam. They can help you figure out what's best for your eyes and your overall health.
