Glaucoma
Comprehensive Ophthalmology
Dr. Lin joined the medical staff at Shasta Eye Medical Group in early 2000. He is currently the only ophthalmologist in the North State Region who has undertaken advanced glaucoma fellowship training. Prior to his arrival in Redding in early 2000, Dr. Lin practiced as the sole glaucoma specialist first in Fresno, CA and then in Santa Barbara, CA. As a glaucoma specialist, Dr. Lin utilizes the most technologically up-to-date clinical tools to monitor his patients, including computerized visual field monitoring, simultaneous stereo optic nerve photography, and laser measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. When necessary, he performs delicate laser surgery in the office or surgical procedures in the operating room. He utilizes chemotherapy agents to minimize scarring of the glaucoma filter, releasable suture techniques to carefully regulate the amount of fluid being released from the surgical filter, and when appropriate, special glaucoma tube implants designed to control the eye pressure when other surgeries have failed or would have a high risk of failure. In addition, he performs different surgical procedures for infants born with glaucoma. Other doctors often refer him especially challenging patients whose previous glaucoma surgeries have been unsuccessful. His expertise is available to ophthalmologists, optometrists, and patients for consultation on glaucoma-related eye care.
Dr. Lin is often asked to assist pharmaceutical companies with research studies involving new glaucoma medications. A significant number of his patients have participated in these trials, allowing them the opportunity to help with the development of medications that ultimately may benefit all patients with glaucoma.
In addition to specialized glaucoma care, Dr. Lin provides comprehensive ophthalmology care including general eye exams, laser surgery, small-incision, stitchless, phacoemulsification cataract surgery, diabetic eye care, and contact lens care. Dr. Lin’s patients constantly comment on his kind, careful explanations of their eye problems, and a number of his previous patients traveled from Fresno to Santa Barbara to continue their eye care with him. These same dedicated patients and a contingent of his loyal Santa Barbara patients now travel to Redding to see Dr. Lin.
Dr. Lin, a native of Schenectady, NY, attended college and medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He entered college as a Benjamin Franklin Scholar and Presidential Scholar and later won many other awards, including a Dean’s Award for distinguished research as a junior in college and the Williams Award for distinguished medical research in his sophomore year of medical school. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Indiana University where he had the distinction of being elected to the Chief Resident position in his final year of training. He went on to complete a two year glaucoma fellowship at Washington University Eye Center in St. Louis, Missouri and was a recipient of both the Heed Foundation Fellowship and a National Institutes of Health Visual Sciences Training Grant. Each of these awards is considered a top distinction among ophthalmologists pursuing advanced fellowship training. He has co-authored several articles in medical journals and is a contributing author to two recent ophthalmology textbooks.
Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1994 and recertified in 2004, Dr. Lin is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the California Academy of Ophthalmology (CAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Becker Glaucoma Society. He serves as an Associate Examiner of the American Board of Ophthalmology, administering the oral portion of the examination taken by young ophthalmologists seeking board certification. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara County Medical Society and as an Alternate Delegate to the House of Delegates of the CMA from Santa Barbara. He has volunteered his expertise to patients of Surgical Eye Expeditions International (SEEI) and the National Eye Care Project of the AAO. He served as the Educational Program Director for the Santa Barbara Ophthalmology Society from 1996 until 1999. He has taught Stanford University eye residents surgical and outpatient glaucoma care while serving as a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and he continues to be an invited speaker to national and regional ophthalmology and optometry meetings.
Dr. Lin is an avid freediver, scuba diver, tennis player, bicyclist, and swimmer. He resides in Redding with his wife Connie, two daughters, and two sons. They are happily devoted to their children's educational and extracurricular activities. The family has tremendously enjoyed exploring the wonderful outdoor opportunities of the North State Region.
